One of the most comforting experiences we can have is meeting a friend after a long period of no communication and realising that nothing has changed while everything has changed. We may lead opposing lifestyles, but we still share the same values. We may have developed exceedingly different tastes and skills, but we still enjoy spending time in a similar fashion. We may have learned the secrets of diverse fields of expertise, but we have reached the same conclusions about what matters. Whenever I have sat in front of such a friend after years of mutual silence, it has taken seconds before we have both been aware of the tremendous power of genuine friendship.

I have found that some of the most potent relationships are those forged in our late teens and early twenties. I don’t think it has much to do with age but with the nature of the period: these are moments of transcendental changes and monumental decisions that shape our lives for years to come. Fortunately, the modern world allows for these formative stages to occur more often and throughout our lives if we allow ourselves to ride the mutation that is inherent to our reality. Regardless of when it happens or who these important people are, we have created a shared experience…
