Unconditionally Safe Spaces Are Something To Treasure
We might not even be aware we have them
Safe spaces are in vogue. At least, the concept of a safe space is. Safe spaces are extremely important for people who often don’t have the chance to express themselves freely without risking backlash. Psychologically diverse people need safe spaces. Discriminated or marginalised minorities need safe spaces. Those are obvious examples, and it is to these collectives that we should be thankful for the concept.
Basically, anyone who doesn’t belong, or feels they don’t belong, to the majority could use a safe space. Safe spaces aren’t always critical, but they are always useful. To a certain extent, it is a good idea to refrain from being 100% us everywhere all the time. As it happens with secrets, it would be overwhelmingly unpleasant if we were always fully open with everyone about everything.
Safe spaces make it possible for us to be us with people like us without fear that we may offend someone in the process. It doesn’t say much about our society that we need some of these spaces to begin with, but, to a certain degree, safe spaces will always be necessary.
