That Wonderful Feeling Of Meaning Something To Someone

Creatives are so often tormented by the question: “why would anyone care?” They will care when it means something to them, they will care when what we do matters.

I remember the first time I got something in return for making music. It was a bottle of Carlsberg from the pub where I had made my open mic debut.

I kept that bottle on a shelf for years. It might still be in a box somewhere in the flat to this day.

And yet, that night, playing on that stage, it probably only mattered to me. I can’t remember what I played, only that I played. And that I got a beer for doing so. It was about overcoming myself, my fears.

Then I was lucky enough to move on to mattering to others. You create, you show it to the world, and certain individuals in the vastness of the universe care enough to listen and to react to what you have brought them.

And someone within that group thinks your work means something, something that nothing else means, something that makes them feel like nothing else does. A connection. Inspiration.

It matters because we have something to say and someone to say it to. It matters because it’s honest. It matters because it’s a ripple that creates ripples. It matters because you matter.

I’m a musician, but I think every day. So I write every day. Thoughts. Reflections. Life.
