A personal tale and a hammering metaphor
We Come From The Wild West
Over the past few years, I have paid for a lot of software. As a teenager in the Wild West of the early internet age, paying for software was something you avoided at all costs. Our parents may have paid for operating systems and productivity tools, but we knew better: we could find free, open-source alternatives and download almost anything else for free. Thus, it took me a while to understand that, when we have the means, it is worth investing in better products and fewer headaches.
My Plugin Addiction
Inevitably, my experience has varied. Some software I use every day, and it has served me so well I almost feel like worshipping it. It is incredible how $30 for something we never use seems like a lot compared to $300 invested in a tool that saves us hours weekly. In my early music production days, I went on a plugin-purchasing rampage from which I had to extricate myself before it became an addiction. However, the quantity of products I acquired and the number of companies I traded with gives me many juicy data points.
