Safe Places That Lead To Better
Treasures we find, realities we should build
Safe spaces are exceedingly useful for those whose nature can be a source of conflict for the world’s most intolerant inhabitants. However, we should aspire not to shelter in safe spaces but to make the places we inhabit safe.
Most of us will agree that war can be profitable for those actively engaging in the effort from a distance. Wars demand such a drain on resources that governments won’t hesitate to promulgate intensive, relentless and (if necessary) unregulated industrial production. Once the carnage is over, and while we mourn the dead, many will gladly rub their hands planning the reconstruction phase. Indeed, some always seem to win.
Nevertheless, we all understand the destructive nature of war makes it inviable as the foundation for viable civilisation. Even if we were cynical enough to accept that we will send a few thousand of the least well-off among us to die for the greater economic good every year, we couldn’t deny that this would result in catastrophic business in the long term. Destroying the old to build anew is fine as long as the building can happen. Armed conflict is so devastating and infectious that it always imposes a volatile and nihilistic state of mind on those who suffer it.
