By seeking challenging signals

Learning to block out the noise is always a good idea in an increasingly cacophonous world. When everyone has a megaphone, the one who manages to turn it to 11 has a higher chance of being heard. Thus, having a voice isn’t as important as it used to be. Any human tends to have something to say, so it is normal to see a decline in the quality of all the published material. This voracious noise threatens to consume up to our last functional brain cell. In this context, we must learn to block out the noise. Yet, the noise keeps coming, leaking through the cracks of our concentration and willpower.

Indeed, it is often impossible to read a book when someone is having a ridiculous conversation at an absurd volume in the quiet car of our morning commute. Sometimes, a man makes a fool of himself while on a doomed first date, and we happen to sit next to the unfortunate ephemeral couple. Sometimes, a stupid opinion renders us incapable of doing anything other than mentally refuting the logically offending arguments for half an hour. Regardless of the nature of the noise, blocking it out is necessary. Good headphones help. Meditation helps. Even selective and temporary isolation does. Eventually, though, the noise must be met with signals.
