Imagine we kept track of all the decisions we ever made. Now imagine we also kept track of all the decisions we never made.
It is a daunting prospect. It is overwhelming. It is sobering.
The Opportunity
It would also be a unique opportunity to make better decisions going forward, however painful our first visits to this hypothetical decision archive would be.
I am not making the cheap argument of looking back at past decisions before making new decisions. Past decisions can inform future decisions to a certain degree, but they aren’t valid substitutes. We cannot simply look at what we did wrong two years ago and do the opposite now. The circumstances have changed. We have changed. And so have those around us.
Going Deeper
In order to truly learn from past decisions we must go at least one level deeper. We must look at the circumstances at the time. We must look at the reasons we had. Why did we decide the way we decided? Were we convinced by anybody? If so, by whom and with what arguments? What emotions were we…
