Reflections on a couple of essential types of writing after 800 articles in 800 days.

This is the 801 article I’ve written in the past 801 days (not all here on Medium, this started as a personal blog). According to my software, this amounts to over 200,000 words.

As a matter of fact, I’ve written while extremely busy and stressed, and I’ve written when writing has been the only thing I’ve had to do. I’ve written to keep in touch with creativity when mundanity threatened to reign supreme, and I’ve written when almost every minute of my day was devoted to creativity.

Today I want to write about writing. I feel there are a couple of types of writing. Not genres or styles, no, there hundreds of those. I’m referring to the essence of writing. For instance, even when appearing in the same platform, it’s interesting to see how two pens could hardly be motivated by more different things. Sometimes I read stuff that makes me wonder if what I do is actually writing or whether I should call it something else. But no, writing is broad enough, great enough to embrace us all.

From years of idle observation, I see writers who have been gifted with the ability to weave sentences together but whose purpose isn’t writing itself: instead, writing is the means to an end. These tend to be very successful…
