Corruptland

In the land of the cheats, the corruptible man is king. If everyone cheated, there would be no rules; or rather, there would be rules about how to cheat. Except there would be no cheating because those inhabiting this exasperating paradox would be following the rules of cheating. Deception requires a significant number of members of the collective not to participate. Fraud only makes sense if it is balanced by honourable people. That is where the advantage lies for the trickster.

Despair

The honourable person is likely to despair when others don’t abide by the accepted code. Some will choose to look the other way for fear of losing their minds should they face the evident injustice of the system. Others will indeed become deranged when witnessing their integrity become their vulnerability. It is infuriating to be poor when the only reason is that you didn’t steal. Furthermore, when defrauding is the general practice, no amount of individual integrity will be able to turn the tide. The despondency that ensues can be overwhelming.
