The Zone

There is little more pleasurable for the high achiever than entering that zone of inspired, focused and efficient work. Time seems to slow down around us, as though waters parted for us to cross an otherwise turbulent river. We know what we must do, and nothing seems capable of stopping our torrent of imagination and action. We do, break, fix, and do some more. To those looking in from the outside, we may appear like the popular-culture depiction of a mad scientist. From the inside, it is a blissful moment of connection and accomplishment, as though we became the conduit for some greater power’s labour.

How Not To Find It Again

Unsurprisingly, the zone is highly addictive. We can forget about exiting it of our own accord. Something or someone will have to pull us out of it, or we won’t leave until the job is complete. However, like every good addiction, we will experience the urge to return to the zone. We need to find it, enter it again and have evidence that it still exists, that it isn’t a mere memory of an idealised time. Often, we make one of two mistakes in our obsession to reclaim this magical space-time: either we stop working until we find it or work incessantly to access it again…
