I was thinking about this the other day: you know how cats clean themselves in the same way? They lick their paws and then brush it over their faces... they all do it, even if they've never seen another cat do it. They don't learn it. It's in their unconscious. And then I thought almost all of our human reality is about stuff that we learn... very little is instinctive. But of course the unconscious is there, the conflict you mention is latent, and when it does happen it is hard to resolve.
