Hope Is Too Precious To Be Given Away So Cheaply

Exasperated Spectator

I know I am picky when it comes to writing. Since I have a predilection for plot and character development in fiction, I understand continuity errors and character inconsistencies probably irritate me more than the average reader or spectator. However, if I had to award the most exasperating moment in shows and films, I would choose the simple “it’s going to be okay/alright” line that will inevitably feature in almost any work.

I feel there is more reason to despise this than any other technical faux pas. It is repetitive, cliche and boring to a degree it has become a bit of a joke. It’s not even a good joke, though. In any case, the umpteenth example of the abused line has prompted this article, so now it is up to me to make all these years of mediocre writing count for something (insert laughter). I always imagined how I would feel if I told my friend about some recent tragedy, and they told me everything would be okay. We probably wouldn’t be friends for much longer.

False Hope

Telling someone everything will be alright is a promise of hope. Promises and hope are two of the most precious concepts we humans can comprehend. We should not give them away so…
