Waiting for the inspiration to come is a great concept and a terrible idea for the creative who is keen on actually creating anything.

They Lied To Us!

Popular culture has instilled this image of the genius that becomes possessed by an unimaginable idea that presents itself to them as if by magic. This concept has evolved into the idea of the muse, a personified version of inspiration through which the creative gets work done. I don’t intend to debunk some myth and say that it is all hard work and that a personal gift isn’t required. I know what it is to be struck by inspiration. I’ve also even developed ways to become better at listening to it: singing melodies into my phone app on my way to work and rushing to the toilet to write furious notes before the idea left me are only two examples. Inspiration is real; there is no denying that.

Only A Part

However, inspiration is only a part of the creative process. I know this is obvious to many, but I also know we often manage to forget about it. An idea is everything and nothing at the same time.
