Enough Money Not To Care How To Make It
Can we become masters of something that we’ve never found particularly appealing?
My brother and I have never cared too much about money. As long as we have had enough to live on and not be a burden on others, we have been happy. We have never derived pleasure from ostentation, as can often be the case for people who have never been rich but have come into a certain amount of money. The other day we were suddenly aware that we simply didn’t have the means to afford a luxury care home for our 92-year-old grandfather.
It’s not dramatic. Our grandad is happy where he is, in his old flat, cared for and loved by his small family. It was a matter of realising that, even if we wanted to, we simply can’t lash out a couple of grand every month. Our family has never cared much about money, and money never cares much whether you care about it or not.
For the past decade I’ve lived in varying circumstances, from the austerity of being a recent graduate to the comforts of holding a managerial position in the corporate world. From holding onto every penny to splashing out every weekend to saving up for the next adventure. I can adapt. I don’t need much. However, this is as short-sighted as those blinded by fast riches.
