Backward Or Forward Are Not The Only Possible Directions
What to do when the logic holds but the premise is false
How Are You?
I have few friends who don’t think of ‘how are you?’ as a simple formality we must wave before engaging in the real purpose of a conversation. Similarly, whenever I ask it, I mean the question: I don’t use it as a crutch between greeting and communication. If I ask someone how they are doing, I am genuinely interested in learning about their current state. Thus, it came as no surprise when my friend responded to my apparently mundane greeting by expressing he could not complain, given that about 5 billion fellow humans would probably envy his life.
Contentment
I thought about how much we take for granted. I thought about how easy it is to do so. I don’t feel fully accomplished, not even close, but I wake up every morning in peace and go to bed without having to worry about my safety, about having a roof over my head tomorrow, about the availability of food or warmth or clean water. I am not rich, not even close, but I drink exquisite coffee every morning and have time to read excellent literature and watch entertaining shows. If I consider the billions of people who cannot claim to have a chance to do the same, I should feel content.
