Anybody Else Out There Who Does Not Love Autumn?

I don’t normally rant, but since it isn’t an attack on anybody, I thought I’d share my thoughts on the season that has just pounced on us…

I’ve never liked autumn. This might shock many because, in my experience, everyone seems to love this season.

The colours, the leaves, the mild temperature… I get it. But I love the colours of summer too. And spring is also mild. What can I say? I just don’t get all this autumn hype.

In fact, personally, I find it quite depressing. The days get shorter, the weather gets colder, and everything seems to be dying. The continuous verbal form is deliberate: it isn’t as though everything just died… Oh no, autumn will take its time. Everything seems to be dying forever. The Americans call it fall, and it does feel like an eternal fall, a bottomless one.

It does end, though. One can count on winter to break our fall. ‘What? You like winter?’ I confess: I do.

I have always liked winter. There is something apocalyptic about it. There is something desolate. There is something to guard oneself against, to resist against. Resistance always fuels camaraderie: a crackling fireplace, a crowded pub, a comforting blanket. Winter wants us together. I…
